Earth ships are popping up throughout the world as people are realizing more and more the way our society is built is no longer feasible for the long term sustainability of our beautiful planet. These earth ship homes are usually equipped with all the amenities needed to sustain itself off the grid. Using mostly recycled materials to build, this way of living is one of the best ways to help reduce our footprint on this planet. Watch the short video below to be introduced to the versatility of Earth Ships!

The beauty of the Earth ship is you can make your home however you like, it is a creative process and you build your home to function for you to live your best life. These Earth ships are powered with sustainable energy, usually being solar power, but wind turbines and water power are also options depending on the environment in which you are building. Rain water is collected using the slanted roofs and tubes to deposit the water into containers below ground for storage, then is filtered to make safe for drinking, cooking and bathing purposes. Usually there is a green house built as the front of the Earth ship to grow your own crops and greenery, any water left over from bathing or hand washing can be used to water these plants. These Earth ships can function in any climate, using strategically placed windows the home actually absorbs the heat from the sun into the base wall of the building and with hold it there throughout the colder months, the longer the earth ship has been built the more heat it will store throughout the years.

These homes are generally group projects, allowing people to come together as a community to build something to move toward the future. Even if one of these homes isn’t for you, the experience of creating one with a group of like-minded individuals is a reward in itself!
